Lantern flower garland

beautiful, natural and plastic-free DIY decorations for indoors and outdoors

Beauty can be found everywhere for those who are able to search and look... especially in nature. My parents' house is surrounded by a beautiful garden and as my mother loves gardening, the garden has always been full of beautiful plants and flowers. I've always been fascinated by nature and since I was a child I've loved going for walks in the woods, lying in the grass in the garden to read, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin on the beach... In short, I have always loved any opportunity to spend time in nature and enjoy its harmony, its peace and the enchanting feeling of its simple beauty. To this day, I love taking walks through the woods and fields, surrounded by greenery. Fortunately, I live in a small town in the middle of the Black Forest, so I can be in the forest at any time to stretch my legs and clear my head. I also like being surrounded by plants at home. I love having small flower pots and vases with fresh, colorful and fragrant flowers and fresh herbs in pots for the kitchen.

One of my favorite plants that has captivated me since childhood is the one that bears these beautiful heart-shaped fruits that resemble deep orange lanterns. The lantern flower is called Physalis alkekengi and grows excellently in our latitudes. I find the fruits very special because the lantern remains closed and they retain their shape and color even when dried. In addition, when they are dry, their stem forms a small hook that resembles the handle of an umbrella. They can be easily hung from a thread or the edge of a glass, for example.

In the "Feather garland" post, I already talked about how much I like garlands and the effect they have on me. Here I'll tell you about a garland made from lantern flowers. As usual, this garland is a very easy project to make if you have lantern flowers to hand. All you need to do is thread on the orange fruit shells with a needle and thread - simply pierce through the shell as if you were threading beads onto a necklace. As soon as you have reached the desired length or there are no more lantern flowers left, simply close one side with a wooden or glass bead and hang the other end where you want to decorate. The bead serves to weigh down the lower end so that the garland falls more beautifully. In my case, I hung it on the curtain rail next to the patio door and I really like its effect against the white curtain.

To summarize, you need:

  • Lantern flowers (you can find seeds here to entice them into your garden too)

  • Needle and thread

  • wooden bead

Hanging the garland vertically is one idea and the variant that I initially implemented. However, I have also hung a garland like this across the room - also a pretty, atmospheric decoration, even for parties in late summer or fall. In the fall, a garland like this adorned our front door. These are just a few ideas - as you can see, there are no limits to your imagination.

If you still have lantern flowers left over after you have strung your garland, you can find another decoration idea in the article "Glass with lantern flowers".

If you like the garland, please share the post with someone you know who might also like it. This way you let the other person know that you thought of them and help me to stay active and creative on this website. My motivation to continue giving you inspiration for the odd gift or home decoration is great - so together we can make the world an even more beautiful place. A hug and see you soon!
