Ikea hack: self-sewn fabric cover for organizer SKUBB

Simple DIY project with a big impact - decorative organizer made from beautiful fabric

Welcome to this simple Ikea hack! In this DIY project, I'll show you how to make a self-sewn fabric cover for your Ikea organizers in a few simple steps. This creative solution combines functionality with individual design and gives your rooms a personal touch... and practical organization :-)

I find the Ikea "Skubb" boxes very practical: for clothes in the changing unit, socks, tights, small items in the pantry, kitchen utensils or whatever else... They come in different sizes, can be arranged in the drawer according to your needs and ensure that everything stays neatly in its place and can be found at a glance.

You don't see them much in the drawers - but this little "Skubb" cube should have its place on the changing table and I didn't like its impersonal white Ikea design, so I decided without further ado to make it a new custom-fit dress. How to sew a fabric cover for Ikea SKUBB Organizer without a pattern. In the short Ikea hack SKUBB organizer instructions with pictures, I take you along with me and you can sew it in no time at all:

You need for the fabric-covered organizer:

  • Ikea Organizer (SKUBB Box) (length x width x height)

  • Beautiful cotton fabric of your choice:

(length+6cm) x (width+6cm) and

Height x 2/3 height x circumference+1cm seam allowance

  • Tailor's chalk or pencil

  • scissors

  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

  • Embellishments as desired (e.g. buttons, ribbons)

Step-by-step instructions

1. take measurements and cut the fabric

  • Measure the side lengths of your Ikea organizer and transfer them to the back of your fabric. Mark the corners in the middle of the fabric with tailor's chalk or a pencil.

  • Cut the fabric according to the markings: you will need a base section for the inside with the dimensions of the base plus approx. 6 cm on both sides and a piece of fabric for the outside with the dimensions (height of the organizer x 2/3 of the height x circumference plus 1 cm seam allowance)

2. sewing the bottom part inside

  • Sew the corners of the bottom section together so that the seams end at the later corners (see 2nd photo).

  • Then cut off the protruding flaps 0.5 cm from the seam. Depending on the fabric, you can neaten the edges.

3. sewing on the fabric for the outside

  • Check the measurements for the circumference of the organizer and sew the fabric together to form a tube that has exactly the same circumference as the organizer.

  • Now sew the resulting tube to the base section, right sides facing.

4. finishing the cover

  • Almost finished - now measure the height again or put the cover over the organizer to determine how far the end that will later stand up on the base needs to be folded over.

  • Pin the hem in place and sew it all the way around. As the inner edges all lie directly against the organizer, they do not necessarily need to be finished if they are not washed too often.

  • If you like, you can of course decorate the cover with buttons, embroidery or trims.

  • Now you can cover and fill your Ikea organizer - with whatever you want to keep it in order.... and enjoy the new individual look of your "Skubb".

To find your own style, you can experiment with different fabrics and patterns. You may also want to use old items of clothing or fabric remnants for sustainable upcycling - as you only need small pieces, this is particularly suitable for this project. Especially as this way, old favorite items of clothing can be given a new lease of life and continue to bring you joy. This is one of many simple DIY sewing ideas for beginners.
