Practical and decorative cover for wipes and mindfulness in everyday life with children

Life with children is full of wonderful moments, but it can also be hectic and demanding at times. Especially in the midst of the hustle and bustle, it's important to stay mindful and remind yourself to enjoy the moment from time to time. One way to integrate mindfulness into everyday life with children is through DIY projects or lovingly designed everyday objects. Sewing a cover for cleaning cloths is therefore the perfect way to bring more mindfulness into your everyday life. Mindful sewing is one thing, but the lovingly sewn cover can do even more: it can remind you every time you have to clean little hands or mouths to pause for a moment, be fully in the present moment and feel the love you have put into this project. Especially as the act of wiping the children's fingers and noses is also a loving act full of affection and care and ideally the children will also feel this.
As a beginner sewer and parent, I know how valuable it is to be loving and mindful in the moment, especially if we want to teach our children the same principle. I also love to surround myself with beautifully designed items and enjoy them in my everyday life. So I decided to sew a cover for wet wipes: pretty, practical and an opportunity to cultivate mindful attention.
You probably already have the materials at home and can get started straight away - to sew this pretty individual cover for the wet wipes you will need
2 different colored cotton fabrics
sewing thread in a matching color
sewing machine
scissors
sewing clips
Magic marker or tailor's chalk
Step-by-step instructions
Sewing this project does not require advanced skills, just a few basic steps and a willingness to devote loving attention to the process. Take your time to select and arrange the materials. While you are sewing, you can consciously focus on your actions and enjoy the moment.
Step 1: Choose a fabric that makes your heart sing ;-) When choosing the fabric, you can already be mindful by consciously choosing colors and patterns that make you happy.
Step 2: Cut the fabric: you need two rectangular pieces ((length of wet wipes pack + 3cm) x (2.3 x width of pack).
Step 3: Transfer the size of the flap of the wet wipes pack onto a piece of paper and place the template in the middle of the fabric strip. Draw the outline on the fabric with a magic marker or tailor's chalk (see first photo).
Step 4: Now sew the two rectangular strips of fabric right sides together along the oval marking using a simple straight stitch. Then cut out the inside of the oval and trim the seam allowance all the way around so that the edge fits better after turning (see second photo).
Step 4: Now turn your sewn piece. It can be helpful to iron over the edges once.
Step 5: Now pin the short edges of the rectangle together, right sides facing, and sew them together using a straight stitch, neatening the edges if necessary.
Step 6: Once you have closed both short sides, turn everything to the right side and iron over it again. You can now get a good idea of the shape (see fourth photo).
Step 7: Now fold the narrower ends of the rectangle inwards so that the dimensions correspond to the wet wipes pack and the ends overlap by at least 5 cm.Sew the overlapping sides together with a small seam allowance (see fifth photo).
Step 8: So that you can turn your cover later and no unsewn threads or open fabric edges are visible, make a French seam on both sides at this point: to do this, turn the cover over and topstitch both sides (the seams from step 7) again from the other side using a straight stitch. As a result, the frayed seam allowance from before disappears within the current seam allowance and both sides of your cover can be used equally (see sixth photo).
In the last three photos you can see the finished wet wipes cover without contents - with contents from the back - and with contents from the front after turning.
Optional: Add lovely details according to your taste, such as a pretty decorative seam, embroidery, a few sewn-on buttons or a funny iron-on picture. These little details make your project even more special and allow you to add even more individuality to your work alongside the love.
You may want to think about how you can teach your child about the concept of mindfulness while you are making the wet wipes wrapper. A tiny start could be to put the packet in the envelope together and enjoy the self-made and self-designed together. I firmly believe that when there is love in something, it is immediately noticeable and this love, which remains stored in it, makes a big difference to us and can sweeten our lives. And I can well imagine that this project and the use of this lovingly designed package can be a good opportunity to talk about the importance of loving attention in everyday life.
By sewing this cover for wet wipes, you can not only create a practical accessory for everyday life with children, but also use it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness and cultivate loving attention. Because when we are present in the moment and act mindfully, we can not only calm our own minds, but also teach our children valuable life lessons.
If you like the idea and the post, I would be delighted if you would leave me a comment and share the post. I hope you enjoy sewing and wish you lots of tangible love in your everyday life!
A hug and see you soon!
